I’ve long been wanting to start a blog that reviews prayer books and Bibles so Christians (and those exploring Christianity) may find current, thorough reviews of what is out there. Publishers provide varying amounts of information, and most do not include what many feel is a sufficient preview of the contents. This may not be an issue for a $5 prayer book, but it certainly can be when considering the price tag of the Roman Breviary or Liturgy of the Hours.
My goals with this blog are:
to explore the resources out there for prayer and Scripture, namely those that are in print and readily available;
survey the various Christian traditions of prayer, and occasionally demonstrating relationships between various traditions; and,
provide in-depth information about prayer books, breviaries, and Bibles of the Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions for those looking to move deeper into the beautiful and diverse spirituality of the Christian faith.
Part of this venture is to occasionally compare different works in an attempt to help others decide which prayer book, breviary, or Bible might be best for them—many are similar, yet are quite different.
I will try to set aside my own biases, focusing on the content, quality of content, quality of construction and materials used, ease of use, and other measurable aspects of the works under review. That said, my opinions will occasionally be offered.
From time to time, I will draw on the input of other Christians from diverse Christian traditions and with varying levels of experience in this subject—this is provide more insight into the works themselves. I am one man, and my own experiences and background will inform you one way, while the experience and background of others will inform you other ways (and hopefully more helpful ways).
I ask for the help of the blessed Virgin Mary, the protection of holy Archangel Michael, and the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Deo Gratias.
